Ursula has a 2.1 in French and Spanish from London University and still loves speaking or teaching these languages. She trained to teach at Goldsmiths ( London Uni ) but decided to specialise in the primary sector. However life led her into middle schools - Maiden Beech, Swanmead and also secondary schools… Wadham…Holyrood.. and The Gryphon All have been enriching and led her to now.. early retirement from schools plus re training to teach yoga.. and she loves it. She really thought many years ago that yoga for us was just about physical strength, suppleness and continuing mobility but now she sees it is a way to understand the mind, deal with it and progress. If this sounds mysterious come along and find out what she means!
She is married with two grown up children and two grandchildren.. so not so young !!! She was born near Liverpool but has lived in Somerset since the early seventies. She finds the landscape and the wildlife fantastic; she feels that it is a real privilege to live here. She enjoys being out in nature, walking, gardening and when it is warm enough she loves swimming in the sea. She finds learning fantastic and is, at present, training to be a hypnotherapist. Joy is a registered Dance Movement Psychotherapist and over the past seven years has worked with wide ranging populations from frail elders to teenagers, adults with autism to young children.
Her approach to dance movement therapy reflects her life's learning process to date. It is informed by adult learning principles as she began her professional life as a teacher. It rests upon the foundations of humanist psychology; her understanding of group work grew from running co-counselling groups. She has been working as a Management Consultant for the past 20 years and from this she has learnt the importance of understanding and questioning the wider system. Personal therapy and co-counselling have given her a deep understanding and appreciation of psychodynamic forces.
She has completed a four year advanced training with Paul Rebillot, founder of the School of Gestalt and Experiential Teaching. This has given her an appreciation of gestalt process and the use of myth to embody life stories which is informing her movement therapy work. She has also trained and worked closely with Dr Sandra Reeve, Senior Registered Dance Movement Psychotherapist. Her "Move into Life" non-stylised movement work has taught joy to fully embody her movement practice, to see everyone from their potential, to appreciate the healing power of moving in the natural environment and to trust the wisdom of the body.
She brings to he work a fully embodied sense of safety, warmth, sensitivity, joy and fun, a talent for incorporating imagery and metaphor and a love of working in the natural environment.
