SHIATSU
Practitioner
Melanie Ward-Ablitt
Explain briefly about the therapy
Shiatsu is a form of healing bodywork that connects deep into the muscles, joints and underlying energy of the body. It is based on the same meridian and point system as acupuncture but instead of needles practitioners use intuitive, compassionate touch to connect with the recipient on a profound level. A range of techniques may be used depending on what is needed, from gentle holding to deeply releasing stretches and pressure. Our life’s experiences are held in our bodies, but we also hold all the tools needed for our healing. Physical illness, tension, painful emotions, traumatic memories and difficult events can all cause us to experience feelings or sensations we judge to be undesirable. When this happens we tend to ‘close down’. In doing so, however, something is lost and we become cut off from our full aliveness and vitality. Shiatsu can help you reconnect with what has been lost; these inner resources can give you the power to heal yourself and transform your life.
What can the client expect at the appointment
When you receive Shiatsu all of you is welcomed and held; your history and your hopes, your woundedness and your perfection. Through Shiatsu, Melanie offers a safe, confidential and supportive space where you can bring whatever you want to bring and be with whatever you need to be with, in order to find the peace and acceptance that resides within you, and the permission to truly be your unique and beautiful self.
What happens in a session
Shiatsu sessions last 1 hour. At the beginning there is some time to talk and space for you to fully arrive and explore what it is you want and need from the session. The bodywork itself takes place on a comfortable mat on the floor (Shiatsu can also be received sitting in a chair if this is more comfortable for you) and you remain fully clothed. Shiatsu practitioners employ a range of techniques according to what is most needed, and what is appropriate. This can include applying pressure to various areas of the body, stretches, movement, work with the breath, gentle holding and subtle energy work. Throughout the treatment the practitioner is responding to the recipient’s whole being with the appropriate touch and connection. After the treatment there is space to talk about your experience and to look at how you can take what you have gained from the session into your everyday life, or you can just rest and slowly come round.
How many sessions should the client need before they see a result
Most people notice benefits from the first session, but those with a long term problem often benefit most from a course of several treatments. Melanie is happy to talk with you and advise you on what is best for you. However, you do not have to commit to a course of sessions; if you prefer, it is fine to come for a Shiatsu as and when you feel you need it.
Clients often come for Shiatsu with a physical ailment but frequently find that it helps on many other levels too. For this reason receiving Shiatsu can become a life long journey for some people, forming part of their ongoing self-development or spiritual practice.
What can the therapy help
Shiatsu profoundly supports the body’s natural healing process and has the potential to help in any situation. Melanie has supported a wide range of people with their healing journeys involving a wide range of issues, however the problems she most commonly works with in her practice include:
- low energy and fatigue
- chronic back pain
- tension
- emotional issues such as stress, grief and past trauma.
Who would benefit from this type of therapy
As Shiatsu is tailored to the receiver’s specific needs at that moment in time, it has the potential to benefit everyone. Melanie is happy to talk with you if you have any concerns or if you wish to discuss your situation.
Personal recommendation/s from previous client/s:
“Melanie’s presence is gentle, but solid and strong at the same time. She’s open and non-judgemental and works creatively which I really like. Shiatsu has helped to ground me at times, and other times to lift me up. It has…made me think and feel quite differently…and enabled me to get in touch with more creative bits of myself. Melanie allowed me to feel safe enough to be open and honest and I felt very supported by her.” JR
“My reasons for coming for Shiatsu were health based. I was suffering from severe fatigue, as well as a deep emotional trauma which was having a direct impact on my health. The medical profession…offered little advice or timescale as to when I might recover, other than to rest. This was very frustrating as I was literally bed bound for 4 months and felt very fearful I might continue in such a state. When I first started Shiatsu I was very weak… but after my first session I felt very relaxed, and for the first time in months had a genuine instinct that things would begin to get better. Melanie was excellent at judging the type of treatment I needed from week to week. As the treatments continued my body began to fall into balance. I do feel much better now and feel it’s of great importance to continue with Shiatsu on a regular basis instead of waiting for problems to arise before investing time into it! Melanie was a great, great support through some very dark times and obviously has an indescribable talent when it comes to healing.” Emily
“Initially I came for Shiatsu for back problems having tried osteopathy, a chiropractor and physiotherapy in the past. Shiatsu has more than helped my back problems, it also provides me with a sense of wellbeing, incredible relaxation and a sense of being at peace and able to take on the world. I would recommend it to anyone, at any age.” Samantha
“I found the treatment relaxing and powerful at the same time - almost spiritual. It helped with my neck & shoulder pain, and tension. I definitely felt more energised in the following days - I couldn’t recommend it enough in fact, which I have to family and friends! Thanks Melanie.” Aileen
“Just to say that I felt really wonderful after my Shiatsu last night, really freed up and energy flowing well, which was quite a contrast to the previous 7 days. It also really got my chest 'going' - I was coughing up little bits of sputum which I would only normally do after provoking it with a big run or similar cardiovascular activity – sorry, that’s not the most charming of subjects but I was impressed! So thanks.” Jane R
“Initially (the same evening): I had a real sense of calmness and relaxation. I slept very well!! Up to a week: Felt a real sense of ‘letting go’ of stress/anxiety. Was able to deal better with my emotions and was more in tune with what was right for me (i.e. nurturing myself). I continued to feel calm, experienced raised energy levels and a feeling of “everything will turn out okay!” Overall: A really positive helpful experience!” Vicky
