PSYCHOTHERAPY

Practitioners

Sally Barmes, Mike Bellew

Brief explanation of the therapy

Psychotherapy is used to treat emotional and mental disorders by using techniques that encourage communication between patient and therapist rather than using biological means.  It has been known as the “talking cure” and many of the methods used focus on the verbal discussions between therapist and patient.  The therapist will use their training, insight and experience to build a trust with the patient and show them ways that they can deal and cope with situations and emotions more effectively.

Sally works with the "whole person" attending to the mind, body, heart & soul.  She provides a confidential space for both short and long term counselling.

Mike will help you explore the issues that might underlie the "presenting problem" ie come to understand the underlying reasons why problems and decisions that you face keep repeating or seem to be beyond your control.

By exploring early life relationships you can come to understand the unconscious processes that might contribute to current day problems.  This understanding can help you find new ways of coping with difficulties and discover freedom of choice in matters that may have seemed out of control.

What can the client expect at the appointment

The first appointment is usually an assessment session in which you have the opportunity to talk about your problems and explore the ways in which the therapist can help. It is generally one hour of one-to-one counselling or psychotherapy using a variety of methods to explore a given situation or state of being.

What will happen in a session

Sally will provide you with the opportunity to talk in a safe and confidential environment without being judged. A situation or issue may be brought by the client and this will be explored using a variety of methods – talking & listening; noticing breathing, body sensations & feelings; visualisation; role-play; meditation; bodywork.

Mike will also provide an opportunity to talk in a safe and confidential environment without being judged.  A variety of methods will be used to explore the nature of the problems that you bring and, as might be appropriate, relate these to early life experiences. To aid and quicken this process you may also be asked to complete a questionnaire which can provide something of a "psychological profile".

How many sessions should the client need before they see a result

This depends on the client and the issue presented.  It might be that it can be resolved with short-term counselling but on the other hand the issue could require long-term counselling. Typically most problems are resolved in 2 to 8 sessions but it does depend on the complexity of the problem.

What can the therapy help

Any situation that brings about unwanted changes in thinking, mood, behaviour or general well-being. These changes might be brought about by:
  • relationships (family and/or partners)
  • work
  • health related issues
  • lifestyle
  • life changes
  • unresolved issues from the past
Some people just need space in which to explore their lives.
