EMDR (EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITISATION and REPROCESSING)

Practitioner

Mike Bellew

Brief explanation about the therapy

EMDR is used extensively by the military, health services and police forces for the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and is recommended by NICE Guidelines (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) as a treatment of choice for these conditions.

Mike has considerable experience of using EMDR for people who have suffered trauma following car or work related accidents, assault and rape, often referred by insurance companies and solicitors. He also uses EMDR as part of an integrated therapy for unresolved issues stemming from childhood e.g. childhood abuse.

Often EMDR therapy will obtain results and relief for the client that have not been achieved with conventional talking therapy.

What can the client expect at the appointment

The first appointment is usually an assessment session in which you have the opportunity to talk about your problems and explore if EMDR is an appropriate treatment.

What will happen in a session?

Processing of traumatic or difficult memories is achieved through bilateral stimulation of the brain either using eye movements or tapping knees or hands bilaterally.

How many sessions should the client need before they see a result?
This rather depends on the severity of the trauma and previous nervous system encounters with life. Often changes can be felt within a couple of sessions.

What can the therapy help

Mike has successfully treated clients who have suffered;
  • Physical Assault
  • Accidents (Motor and Work related)
  • Rape
  • Childhood Abuse
  • Prolonged exposure to traumatic events

Who would benefit from this type of therapy

Most people respond well to this treatment

Personal recommendation/s from previous client/s

Clients who have ‘held’ onto their anxieties and fears sometimes for years express disbelief at the suddenness and ease of change. Frequently people say "I can’t believe how easy it was to get my life back, it almost seems unreal".
