Brief explanation of the therapy

With growing numbers of  ‘insta-nutritionists’ who have done short online courses, healthy eating bloggers, YouTubers and healthy eating recipe book writers,  how can you be sure that you are getting safe nutritional advice?


Whilst pretty pictures of colourful foods are a lot of fun, ultimately nutrition health advice is something you should only trust a fully trained professional with.

Nutritional therapy is the application of nutrition science in the promotion of health, peak performance and individual care. It is a progressive approach to health optimisation.  Registered Nutritional Therapists are recognised by the Professional Standards Authority to be as competent as other traditional healthcare providers.  It has been recognised that they can make a difference by working together with healthcare providers as part of multidisciplinary teams under NHS commissioning.

BANT Registered Nutritional Therapists take into account individuality that enables personalisation of dietary advice based on the most up-to-date research available. They do not suggest ‘one-size-fits-all’ advice following the health trend of the moment.

What can the client expect at the appointment

Nutritional Therapy is the beginning of a process of change and empowerment. As with all processes, there are a number of stages. Depending on your current health status and personal objectives, the process can complete within a few months with just two or three consultations. However, for many individuals especially those who have endured years of chronic illness, the process may take longer and require a number of steps to achieve their ultimate health and wellness objectives. 

What will happen in a session?

The Initial consultation includes:


  1. 15-minute phone consultation to evaluate your current health status, goals and objectives and to ensure Nutritional Therapy is right for you. If you chose to proceed than a  date will be set for your initial consultation
  2. The next step is to complete a summary health questionnaire to provide background information prior to the initial consultation (particularly important for those with long-term conditions and complex medication) 
  3. The initial one-to-one consultation, this takes approximately 90minutes. A consultation of this length allows time, space and security for you to tell your story. Together we explore your physical and emotional journey to your current status and consider your goals, potential hurdles to change and possible outcomes. The consultation is also a place for personalised explanations, highlighting possible underlying causes and deep learning.
  4. Within a week of your consultation the agreed programme of action will be emailed (or posted) and will outline the changes we discussed during the consultation. This stage entails an initial diet and lifestyle programme that normally lasts 4 to 6 weeks.


The programme may include but not restricted to: 

  • Simple, yet effective dietary changes, sometimes it’s not what you eat but maybe when you eat it
  • Food and/or herbal supplement protocol (if required)
  • Recommendation for diagnostic testing (if required)
  • Recommended additional reading & research
  • A letter to your GP to ensure they are aware of your consultation
  • Up to 20 minutes of cumulative support time via email/Skype/phone

4 to 6 weeks later:

1.       45-minute return one-to-one consultation, evaluating progress and changes made so far, considering achievements and difficulties to change. A further programme is agreed using learning from the difficulties and building on the achievements of the first stage.

2.       Interpretation of diagnostic tests (if undertaken)

As before, within a week of your consultation the new agreed programme of action is sent to you and can include many or all of the elements of the first programme and a further 10 minutes of cumulative support time via email/Skype/phone is also available.


How many sessions should the client need before they see a result

The aim of nutritional therapy is to be able to see initial results the weeks following the initial consultation, although this will vary by individual and their initial health status. 


For each individual the process will vary. Typically, there is an on-going relationship, with continued progress and review consultations over a 6-12 month period. A personalised package of services and fees can be developed at this time.


What can the Therapy help

We provide therapy for individuals who are searching for their health and vitality and who, as yet, have not been able to find what they are looking for in the traditional healthcare and wellbeing settings. We provide teaching and guidance, to empower clients with information and tools to enable them to reclaim their lives.

  • Mental and emotional health


Who would benefit from this type of therapy

If you answer Yes to any of the questions below then Nutritional Therapy may be the right approach for you:


  • Do certain (or maybe all) foods make you feel bloated, with heartburn, abdominal pains and excess wind?
  • Do you hate spring and summer, spending all your time avoiding green spaces, constant sneezing, with a runny nose and itchy eyes? 
  • Are you afraid of eating innocuous foods like peanuts, fish, or eggs?
  • Do you find it difficult to lose weight, but yet very easy to gain weight?
  • Does the very notion of missing a meal make you feel anxious? Do you get irritable, shaky, or angry if you go for more than four hours without eating?
  • Do you feel sleepy and tired during the day, especially after meals, yet cannot seem to get good night’s sleep?
  • Do you find yourself anxious, worried or depressed for no apparent reason and seem to rely on chocolate, cake, pizza, sweet foods, drugs or alcohol to make you feel better?
  • Have you been diagnosed with allergic conditions such as eczema or asthma, or have a history of anaphylactic shock? 
  • Do you have days when you just cannot seem to think straight? Do you now find it more difficult to learn new things, or maybe trouble following a film story or simply the concentration to read a book? 
  • Do you have acne breakouts, yet your adolescent days are just a faint memory?
  • Do you believe your hormones could be ‘out of whack’ and the PMTs or menopausal symptoms are simply a fact of life?
  • Is your life dominated with pain, including headaches, migraines, swollen joints, and/or muscle pain?  Do you take painkillers just to get through the day?
  • Have you lost (or at least forgotten where you left) your sex drive?
  • Do you remember feeling great once, but somehow since you caught that bug, your energy has never really returned?
  • Could you have a lingering bacterial, fungal or viral infection?
  • Do you feel a lack energy and motivation, or consider life just to be one big stressor after another?
  • Have you had a medical diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, mental illness or other autoimmune conditions?



These are just a few of the signs that you may have underlying chronic low-grade inflammation.


Answering Yes to two or more of these questions suggests that perhaps now is the time to take back control of your health and wellbeing.
