Postural Realignment for Health

Joanna Hazelton

Spinal Touch [known as BioMechanics in USA] originated in the work of Dr. John Hurley and his wife, Dr. Helen Saunders, both were chiropractors, however Dr. Hurley’s background was in structural engineering. He became convinced that a body in balance was able to naturally find a healthy homeostasis [a healthy state] enabling the individual to recover from and to resist many acute and chronic conditions. Using the same understanding of the physics and laws of leverage, that are applied within Structural Engineering, to inanimate structures to create ideal balance and stress-control, Hurley and Saunders developed a gentle, quite ‘instruction’ that allows the body to recover its correct balance to gravity.

Hurley and Saunders had a great deal of success in treating a wide range of conditions that often had not responded to other forms of treatment. Their school trained many chiropractors in the method. However, over the years Hurley’s original method became diluted as individuals developed their own ways of working. In the 1960’s Dr. LaMar Rosquist, re-explored the original work of Hurley and Saunders, and with the ability to draw upon more up to date medical understanding proved that Hurley’s original understanding of gently realigning the body enabled the body to recover its natural homeostasis [healthy balance].  Even in cases of such chronic suffering as Multiple Sclerosis, Spinal Touch has been found to bring relief and a degree of stabilization to the sufferer. Headaches, chronic backache and other muscular aches and pains can be tremendously relieved.

Conditions that this method may help include:

  • Spinal strains and sprains on dorsal, cervical and lumber areas.
  • Bursitis and Synovitis of the wrist, elbow and shoulder.
  • Migraine and sinus type headaches.
  • Gastro intestinal disorders, ulcers, colitis, constipation, gastritis, diarrhoea, gallbladder and other similar gastric upset symptoms.
  • Nervous disorders.
  • Skin conditions.
  • Pediatric and geriatric disorders.
  • Mild respiratory complaints.
  • High blood pressure.

Results a person may expect, depending upon the condition, will range from complete and rapid recovery, to a state of control and relief. The extent of recovery and relief is dependent upon the particular complaint, the age of the patient and how long a particular patient may have suffered from the complaint.

Depending upon the severity of the condition a client may expect to have between one to three treatments per week, taking approximately 20-30 minutes.
